This map visualizes the locations of food deserts in Atlanta. We define a food desert as an area that is more than half a mile from a grocery store or farmer's market. Outside of these areas, it is more difficult to walk to buy fresh produce, effectively making the true cost of food more expensive for residents. In urban settings, food deserts occur more often in lower-income areas, and in low-density, suburban areas. Lowering barriers to getting fresh produce to a wider population can play a key role in introducing healthier eating habits and strengthening the social aspects of home food preparation. This map can inform us where to place fresh food in cities in the future to better serve its inhabitants.
