This map was created to return the humanity to workplace death statistics in Massachusetts. It tells the stories of the workers who have been lost to raise awareness of the human cost of unsafe working conditions in Massachusetts. It is important to note that this map only tells the stories of workers killed in on-the-job accidents and incidents. Not included are the numerous other Massachusetts workers who die each year from work-related illnesses such as mesothelioma and silicosis. Deaths caused by work related illnesses are vastly under-reported and very difficult to track, but the number of work related deaths represented on this map are only a fraction of the true yearly death toll. This map marks the death of every worker killed on the job in Massachusetts between 2006 and 2015. This map tells their stories - not just their statistics. It was created by MassCOSH in collaboration with the NuLawLab, to tell these stories and raise awareness of the human cost of unsafe working conditions in Massachusetts.
